INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup Oats (quick oats)
  • 1-2 cups Unsweetened milk (e.g., regular milk, almond milk, or coconut milk) Sweetened Condensed Milk to taste (based on desired creaminess and sweetness or substitute with sugar or sweetener to taste).
  • 2-3 cups Water
  • 1-2 Cinnamon sticks or a pinch of ground cinnamon.
  • ¼ tsp Nutmeg (grated or ground)
  • A pinch of Salt
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract

INSTRUCTIONS

  • In a saucepan, combine the water, your chosen unsweetened milk, and a pinch of salt.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.
  • Gradually add the oats, while whisking continuously to prevent clumps. Continue whisking until the porridge start to thicken.
  • Once the porridge starts to thicken, reduce the heat to low and keep whisking to maintain a smooth texture.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • Let the porridge cook for another 1-2 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
  • Sweeten to taste with sweetened condensed milk, or use sugar or your preferred sweetener as a substitute.
  • Pour the porridge into bowls and serve warm
  • Enjoy your creamy and delicious Jamaican Oats Porridge.

NOTES

  • Quick oats or porridge oats work best for this recipe because they are easy to prepare and cook quickly. Steel-cut or groats oats need more water and longer cooking time.
  • Sugar or any sweetener can be used instead of condensed milk. The amount of sweetened condensed milk or sugar can be modified based on your desired level of sweetness.
  • Adjust the amount of water to achieve your preferred porridge thickness. For a thicker porridge, use less liquid; for a thinner consistency, add more.
  • For a more pronounced spice flavor, increase the quantities of cinnamon and nutmeg slightly.
